The potential bidirectional relationship between long COVID and menstruation

Women have reported menstrual changes after SARS-CoV-2 infection, as well as variation in long-COVID symptoms over the menstrual cycle. We examined: (i) whether COVID is related to abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), (ii) whether symptoms of long COVID vary with the menstrual cycle, and (iii) potential underlying mechanisms.

Here we show that long COVID is associated with SUA in a UK population. Compared with never-infected women (n = 9,423), participants with long-onset COVID (n = 1,048) reported increased menstrual volume, menstrual duration and intermenstrual bleeding, while those who had recovered from acute COVID (n = 1,716) reported few menstrual disturbances....
